“First edition of “India Bakery & Pastry Challenge”

Winner to represent India at Asia Pastry Cup 2010, Singapore
The 4th edition of Bakery Business 2009 – India’s only fair for bakery and pastry professionals threw its doors open on a nippy and wet November morning, notwithstanding the Phyan cyclone forecast. Moving away from traditional formats, the show was jointly inaugurated with a cake-cutting ceremony by Kamlesh Barot, Sr.Vice President, Hotel & Restaurant Association (Western India) and Kumail Khorakhiwala, Jt.Managing Director, Monginis India Pvt.Ltd.

The highlight of the event this year was the first “India Bakery & Pastry Challenge” that witnessed over 50 participants from Marriott’s, Leela Kempinski, Marine Plaza, ITC Maratha, Sahara Star, Hyatt Regency, Orchid, ITC Grand, Olive, Beach Karma, IHMCTAN Mumbai, Rizvi College and Institute of Hospitality & Culinary Arts (Satara). The event was judged by an elite jury comprising Senior Pastry Chefs - Nowzer Iranpour, Pastry Chef (Western Region), Taj Mahal (Mumbai), Prashant Sabne – Pastry Chef, Westin Mumbai, Salil Fadnis - , Executive Chef, and Sahara Star -and Kainaz Messman, Theobroma and Vernon Coelho- President, Western India Culinary Association.

The competition was held in the following categories - 3 Tier Wedding Cake, Artistic Pastry Showpiece, Artistic Bakery Showpiece, Desserts, Petit Fours or Pralines and Desserts.

IBPC attracted the finest crop of bakery & pastry chefs .Pastry Chef Savio Fernandes from J W Marriott, Juhu won the Gold for the 3- Tier Wedding Cake and a Silver for the Artistic Pastry Show piece, while Lawrence Fernandes from JW Marriott won a Gold for Desserts and Chef Promod Chatap from J W Marriott, Juhu Mumbai too won a Gold for Artistic Bakery Showpiece.

Speaking on the occasion, Pradeep Gopalan, Director- Hospitality First says “India Bakery & Pastry Challenge was staged alongside “Bakery Business “2009, specifically to upgrade industry standards and expose the lesser understood and accessed community of bakers, (the industry mass) to appreciate the finer nuances of artisan baking and pastry making.

We believe through India Bakery & Pastry Challenge, we broke ground to create that common platform where traditional bakers and bakery & pastry professionals meet to network and transact business”.

Pastry Chef Savio Fernandes and Chef Lawrence Fernandes from JW Marriott Juhu were selected to represent India at the Asia Pastry Cup in April 2010 in Singapore, while the India team, will be led by Chef Kainaz Messman from Theobroma. It was a pleasure that we could host the India Team for the Asia Pastry Cup’.
